Careers are a beautiful combination of strategy and accident. Some of us are very deliberate and planned, others seize opportunity as they arise. Both approaches have their inbuilt delights – and their natural catastrophes.
I’ve been working with people on their careers for over 20 years, as an executive coach when they are in complex roles, or as a transition expert when they are between roles.
These fundamental facts keep emerging.
- As we grow, we need new kinds of help for new complexities and new roles.
- Few of us have a career strategy – and in mid-career the flaws of any strategy show up.
- Transitions test us and we rarely have a good process to get through them.
- Professional life places a premium on thinking and action, but reflection and recovery underpin the wellness needed for sustained impact.
I address all of these with my clients, using all my experience coaching (and previously recruiting) in over 25 countries, across most of the key industries and with all sizes of company. I’ve lived and worked in London and Hong Kong before coming to Australia. I’ve experienced my own transitions, from Belfast in the Troubles, to Oxford and the world, and from science, through accounting, recruiting and board directorships to running my own coaching practice.
At stake is learning how to thrive. To find the right role, excel in it and enjoy the journey.
