Delegate to lead
Nov 05, 2025There’s ‘do, delegate or dump’. Advice for the time-poor. Delegation is the lynch-pin and key to a great career. So why does delegation for one person look like ‘do or dump’ to everyone else?
Delegation is sophisticated. To get a handle on how you do it, ask yourself:
- Do we trust each other enough?
- Do I want the other person to succeed, or just me?
- Have we both agreed on what success means?
- Am I helping them to lead?
- Am I helping them to learn?
- When will I give myself permission to step back in?
- When will the other person give me permission to get involved again?
- Is the person properly resourced to complete the task well?
- When will we debrief and what's the agenda?
- What feedback do I want about my leadership?
These questions are most important when you're delegating the big, high impact issues, such as big client projects or important business building tasks. Good answers will lead you to create a process that will always attract top talent to support you.
